Graduate School of Comprehensive Scientific Research Program in Biological System Sciences

Four research fields

Applied Life Science

Performs advanced research of life science including Immunology and Cell Biology, Structural Biology of Supramolecule, Reproductive Biology, Bioinformatics and Evolutionary Genomics, Molecular Physiology, and Advanced Plant Cell, Tissue and Organ Culture etc., and elucidates biological functions and their mechanisms with the goal of utilizing the results to enhance society.

Biofunctional Science and Technology  (doctoral course only)

Performs advanced research in biofunctional science and technology including Epidemiology of Health Science for local residents, Science of Disabilities, Kinesiology and motor control, Molecular Pathology and Oncology. The knowledge will advance fundamental aspects of advanced medical technology and pharmaceuticals, with practical applications in the field of health science.

Food Resources Science

Performs advanced research of plant cultivation, food processing including Applied Lipid Chemistry, Food Process Engineering, Farming Systems, Ecology of Insects, Genetic Improvement of Plant Function etc., and elucidates biological functions in the field of food resources with the goal of effective utilization.

Environmental Science

Performs advanced research of scientific techniques including Environmental Material Chemistry, Advanced Material Cycles and Waste Management, Advanced Material Cycles and Waste Management, Instrumental Analysis of the Environment, Chemistry of Environmental Macromolecules, Inorganic Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Risk Assessment and Management etc., to comprehend, predict, and prevent material cycles in the biosphere and environmental and resource measurement systems, while also analyzing land and aquatic environments/ecosystems to develop local/global remediation and conservation techniques.

Four chances to be an international student at PUH

​1. English Track (fall admission to the master’s program) is a special selection program for students. Students accepted through this process are provided with a monthly stipend of 30,000 yen from PUH. This is an entrance examination for master’s program students (fall admission) from partner universities.
 The examination will be held in mid-June. Applicants will be screened on the basis of their English language proficiency and documents. The maximum intake is 5 (2021 fall admission).

2. Graduate Admissions (Regular admission to the master’s and doctoral programs)

3. Exchange Students: This is an exchange program for students from partner universities. Exchange students will be matched with a partner school based on their applications. The program will be implemented depending on the feasibility of acceptance.

4. [2022 fall admission] JICA Long-Term Training Programs. Two laboratories, the Ogita Lab (Plant Cell Manipulation Laboratory) and Yonemura Lab (Laboratory for Atmospheric Environment), are participating in JICA Long-Term Training Programs for 2022.

Enrollment/Tuition Fees (2021)

An additional facility fee (15,600 yen annually) is required in Biological System Sciences.

​Tips for the supervisor matching process

    1. All candidates MUST choose one of the research fields listed below.​

    2. Please read all available information about potential supervisors on the PUH website, as well as the latest publications of the professor (recommended).​

　　　For English Track (Fall admission to the master's program): Please refer "16.Requirements and Procedures".

　　　For others: Please refer the profiles of Faculty[Program in Biological System Sciences: master's and doctral programs].

    3. Contact the professor via e-mail and discuss possible research topics.

​Scholarship program

The MEXT scholarship is one of the most beneficial scholarship programs provided by MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan). To receive the scholarship, you must be nominated as a candidate for a university recommendation. It is a highly competitive process. GPA (Grade Point Average) scores and high English fluency (CEFR, Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) of B2 or higher (e.g., TOEFL (iBT) 72-94) are required to be eligible.

Student life

​The following section gives a glimpse into the accommodation facilities after enrolling in our school, and your student life in Shobara.

[Lodging fees] Free (for students enrolling in the academic year of 2021).
*Note: Limited to two standard years of study after enrolling in the academic year of 2021.
Electricity, water and gas charges to be paid by the student.

Rooms equipped with a TV, refrigerator, gas stove, microwave oven, washing machine, vacuum cleaner, and air conditioning.
*Note: Other articles are arranged when you move in.

A supermarket, drug store, hospital, post office, and City Hall are located nearby.
There is a local bus service (Bihoku Kotsu; "Kendai Line") that serves the campus. The fares for the main sections are as follows, but international students are recommended to purchase an annual commuter pass (60,000 yen for students only).
"Doeisha Minami" is the nearest bus stop to the International Student Residence. It is about 500 meters away from the dormitory and takes about ten minutes by foot.

Joyful - Kenritsu Daigaku Bus Rotary, 250 yen one-way
Doueisha Minami – Kenritsu Daigaku Bus Rotary, 210 yen one-way
There is a cafeteria in the university. *Closed for o-bon and year-end holidays.
Prayer room available (for Muslim students).
